SeaLanes is a beachfront development in Brighton and comprises a 50m heated outdoor pool on the beach to the south of the Volks electric railway, and a two storey development of small business units on the north side of the railway, fronting Madeira Drive.
The pool is now the National Open Water Swimming Centre, which opened on 02 June 2023. The small commercial units are occupied by food and beverage retail outlets, as well as small businesses predominantly in the health and fitness sector.
Evolution were appointed to act as Architects and Principal Designer to undertake the detailed design and construction drawings. The main challenge was to maintain the visual appearance of the Client’s vision and concept design when translating this into construction drawings, and balancing budgetary constraints and the harsh marine environment when making technical design choices.
The pool comprises a concrete basin, partially recessed into the beach, with a stainless steel liner. The changing room building and commercial units are constructed from SIP panels with rainscreen cladding with a palette of three differing materials. Consistency with junction detailing has given a unified appearance throughout.
SeaLanes has transformed this area of the beachfront into a vibrant destination.
