Bexhill Academy had very little social space within the school. At break times when the weather was bad there was insufficient space for all the pupils, even with break times being staggered. With the onset of COVID, social distancing made the situation worse.

Evolution were therefore instructed in the spring of 2020 to design a cover to an existing tarmac MUGA, together with a new playing surface and lighting, and to ensure its completion in the forthcoming summer holiday.

The site presented the challenge of an existing retaining wall on one side and mature oak trees with large root structures on the other. Evolution explored different types of designs and covers. The resultant agreed design provided a steel structure with tensile fabric cover, with lighting in the eaves and a new surface to the tarmac play area suitable for a variety of sports. Evolution worked closely with the Lighting Designer and Arboricultural Consultant to ensure planning permission was obtained without any design related conditions. Evolution obtained building regulation approval, produced construction and tender documentation and acted as Contract Administrator for the construction, which was completed on time in the summer holidays.
