Beam Primary School is located in Dagenham and provides nursery, reception, and Years 1 to 6 places with 2 forms of entry.
Evolution were initially appointed to undertake feasibility studies to extend the school to provide 3 forms of entry together with an early years provision.
The site presented several challenges to development. It is located on a flood plain, there is a high pressure gas main on site, there are several level changes, the main reception was in the heart of the school and the existing early years facility had poor access.
The resultant design provided a new two storey extension at the front of the school providing eight new classrooms, a new main entrance and administration accommodation together with a hall extension. In addition there were two smaller extensions at the rear of the school, one providing a new nursery, some internal refurbishment, additional hard play and improved pedestrian access. A new boiler room was provided together with photovoltaic panels to the roof, a natural ventilation strategy is incorporated throughout, a sedum roof and storm water storage and attenuation. A BREEAM very good was achieved.
Whilst undertaking the design, careful consideration was given to how the Contractor could work in four different locations on the school site safely whilst also causing minimal disruption to the schools operation and the construction was phased accordingly.
Kier were subsequently appointed under a Design and Build contract and they appointed Evolution to undertake all construction drawings.
